Too much of not enough…
Too much of not enough…..
When I enter a “grocery store” I am often overcome by the feeling that for all the boxes and bags on the shelf there is so little real food on offer. I know I’m not alone when I see people looking confused over the many choices.
Sweetened, salted, processed, dyed, mixed, flattened, packed and shipped. And it’s a “deal” or a “steal” or “on sale”!
Hard to resist…so many claims. But it pays to look deeper. It’s not always easy to discern the real value of a product by looking at the nutrition panel.
What I look for:
Compare the serving size…What may seem like a low calorie choice may actually be a small serving.
We look for protein and fiber, the more the better, from the ingredients… not added after the fact.
Carbs are tricky. You want them for fuel but slow burn is better than a quick shot.
As Gary Taubes says: “Not all calories are created equal”. I love a Croissant in the morning but even if the calories are the same, I know the carbs in my BOLA granola are going to fuel me for longer.
Our national obsession with fat and calories have obscured the real villains, empty carbs and too much sugar. When it comes to sugar…less is better. Most of us love sweet but these days we are consciously choosing less. All sugars are processed by the body in the same way.
Agave, date or coconut sugars make claims to being “better” but Maple Syrup or non-GMO verified Brown Sugar are “local” and they all become glucose in the body.

Our Original BOLA granola grew up when sugar was not such a bad word and I enjoy it daily with plain yogurt. For those looking to cut back we offer our BARELY SWEET with 4gr of sweet from Maple Syrup, no refined sugars.
At BOLA granola we strive to provide the best of both worlds, great nutrition and great taste!

Here’s to your good health!
